Erzulie Freda is one of the most beloved of the Lwa.  She represents love, beauty, purity, the ideal female and the moon.  She can influence romance and marriage, good fortune, and artistic creation.

Erzulie Freda is pale in appearance..almost white, even though she is Dahomean in origin. Erzulie wears three wedding bands since she has been (or is) married to Damballah, Ogoun and Agwe. She has often flirted with Zaka, but she has completely dismissed his more coarse brother Ghede as unworthy. She is pleasure-loving, extravagant and likes to give and get presents. Erzulie is fabulously rich, and, when she mounts someone the first act is always to accomplish her elaborate toilette. The very best of things which the houngan or mambo have are reserved for Erzulie. She will bathe, using soap still in a fresh wrapper if possible. She will dress in silks with fresh flowers and other signs of her femininity and specialness. She fond of men but mistrust women as rivals. Erzulie is a woman of etiquette, and when she pretends to speak French, she purposely talks in a high pitched voice. She is a master of coquetry. She may simply visit with her servants, or she may eat or drink with great delicacy. She loves to dance and is the most graceful of all the Lwa. Erzulie is quite special to men and will dance with them, kiss and caress them, even in an often embarrassing manner. Yet she is closely associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Erzulie has tremendous power and is feared as much as she is loved. Also, she has several different roles:  goddess of the word, love, help, goodwill, health, beauty and fortune, as well as goddess of jealousy, vengeance, and discord.

Erzulie is not a Lwa of elemental forces, but THE Lwa of ideal dreams, hopes and aspirations.  She is the ability to conceptualize, the ability to dream, the artistic ability to create.

She is a master of coquetry. She may simply visit with her servants, or she may eat or drink with great delicacy. She loves to dance and is the most graceful of all the Lwa. She is quite special to men and will dance with them, kiss and caress them, even in an often embarrassing manner.

Yet she is closely associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary and her symbol is the heart, usually one broken with an arrow in much the same way as a dominant Catholic portrait of Mary has it. However, the visit of Erzulie is never fully satisfying. In the end she always begins to weep.  The world is just too much for her. At first people try to comfort her with more delicate food or drink or other gifts, but her tears continue to flow. It is this tearful and sad side of her that allows the women to accept her in her haughty ways. She is, in the end, one who suffers the burden of the world's sorrows.

Her sacred days are Tuesday and Thursday. Her colors are pale pink and pale blue.  Her symbols include white doves and hearts.  Some offerings for Erzulie include:  desserts, sweet drinks, champagne, perfumes, flowers, candles or beauty products.  She LOVES anything beautiful and decadent.  White doves are also sometimes offered to her.

She is associated with the following Saints:  The Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Our Lady of Caridad del Cobre Lasyrenn, Maria Delorosa del Monte Calvario.

MAMBO'S EDIT:  Erzulie Freda is represented by the Virgin Mary. On that altar there are actually two statues - a small one of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the other one (the big one at the top) is Cuban in origin: Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre (Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre).   You can definitely use your prayer cards on your altar.

Thank you Mambo!!  I'll be looking up pictures of La Nuestra Senora!  It's a beautiful alter,  I'm sure pictures do not do it justice!

Subject: Vltn’s-DAY and how to Honor Erzulie  spellmakerberk
Hi Guys
Since I serve Erzulie Freda Mambo told me I may answer this question.
If you have checked the files section, as recommended by Bridget, then you will see some really good tips and things to start with. There is no wrong way to go with honoring Erzulie (or any of the lois for that matter). Some of the key things Erzulie likes are chocolates, sugary drinks, gold jewelry, roses, hearts, decorative small mirrors, flowery perfumes, and anything pink. Her main colors are pink and gold. If you cant find things that fall into those categories during the
Valentine’s Day commercialism, you will NEVER find those things, so take advantage of it during the next month!
As far as specifics here are things that I have found to be very good offerings
Blackberry liqueurs and wines
Pink Champagne
any chocolate candy
Snowballs (they are pink coconut-cake-like things, shaped something
like a baseball with chocolate cake stuff in the middle, and some
marshmallow somewhere in there - you can typically find this near
Conversation hearts
pink candles
Gold jewelry (can be gold plated)
Pink roses (real, plastic, or in candle form)
rose petals
anything really girly and pink
pink and gold sequins and glitter
You guys can get creative with this. Go with your heart, and stay in your price range. There is nothing saying that the chocolates must be Godiva. If your price range affords you Godiva then use it, if your price range affords you Hershey’s kisses then use them. Honestly,
none of the lois (or us at Spellmaker) want you guys to miss paying rent because you spent all of your money on offerings and setting up your altar. Personally, I use Blackberry Manischewitz, which costs me $3.50 per bottle (yes a Kosher wine, and she does not mind!!)
Really, have fun with it. If you decide to set up a full altar to her for the next month then do it from your heart. Do it so that you think its pretty. Do it with your goal in mind - your HD and you,
together forever, and happily, crazy in love.
If you can’t find anything that you think is appropriate, you can purchase it from Spellmaker. The pink and yellow household candles come in sets, and you can use Erzulie’s Marriage oil with them. Closer to Valentine’s day we will be taking pics of the Erzulie altar here in the office to post on the forum for you guys. Feel free to share any of your pictures as well!
Have fun and keep us posted. Love and Light
