Agwe (Ogg-way)Captain of the Sea and patron of sailors. He is sometimes invoked as "Shell of the Sea." He is signaled by blowing a conch shell, although fog horn or sea whistle noises are also good.OFFERINGS: sea water, shells, sponges, stones, shells (things from the floor of the ocean); abarque (a flat raft with an edge) laden with foods and drink, or aboat, painted blue and white, with the name "IMMAMOU" painted on the side of it.COLORS: All colors of the sea are appropriate. SYMBOLS: conch shell, boats, - all things seafaring are sacred to him. . Agwe is certainly a regal type of lwa. He is said to live with La Siren in a lavish underwater palace. He is most often pictured as a light-skinned or mulatto - the hallmark depiction is his sea-green eyes! His wife is La Sirene, the sea-aspect of the Goddess of Love, Erzulie. As La Sirene Erzulie is Agwe's legal wife; but as Erzulie, her constant companion is Ogoun, the hero god of war. Ogoun is a deity of fire. Legend has it that there is a constant feud between Agwe and Ogoun, not only because of the incompatibility between water and fire, but also because La Sirene is chronically "en affaire" with Ogoun. NAMES: "Agouer", Great God of the Sea; "Shell of the Sea". SAINTS: St. Ulrich.
Alegba (ah leg Baa)Extremely powerful lwa known as the Gatekeeper or Opener of Doors. Lwa of doorways and crossroads. The messenger of the gods. ALWAYS contact Legba first before looking for other LWA help. Contact Papa Legba for when you need doors to open in your life. Ask him for help when good communication is needed. Ask for his help for any divination or oracle work. OFFERINGS: Coconut candies, Rum, Popcorn, small toys are always good. Also most candy, smoked foods, black goats, green bananas, toys, rice, cassava, molasses, candles, roosters and chickens. COLORS: Red and white usually and also red and black. DAYS: Mondays. SYMBOLS: Dogs are sacred to Legba. All doorways are sacred to him. His shrine is usually located at the gate of the village in the countryside. Can appear as an old man on a crutch, sprinkling water. In Benin and Nigeria, Legba is viewed as young and virile, is often horned and ithyphallic. Legba unifies opposites, enables communication between worlds: male and female, human and divine, older and younger generations, the living and the dead, the sacred and the secular, the universe and its origin. His nature is both generous and cruel. Kafou Legba is his dark aspect, the malevolent trickster who diverts humans from their true paths. NATION: Rada. NAMES: Legba, Papa Legba, Atibon Alebga, Elegba, Eshu. SAINTS: St. Lazarus, St. Anthony of Padua, sometimes St. Peter. Because of his position as 'gate-keeper' between the worlds of the living and the mysteries he is often identified with Saint Peter who holds a comparable position in Catholic tradition. But he is most often depicted in Haiti as St. Lazarus.
Ayizan VeleketeAyizan protects against malevolent magic, and is the psychic security which is power and health.OFFERINGS: Palm leaf, roosters. Light rum, herbal teasCOLORS: White and Silver or Gold. SYMBOLS: Palm tree or leavesConsidered to be very beautiful, Ayizan is a root Lwa, the wife and feminine counterpart of Loko, and patron of the marketplace and public spaces. Yoruba tradition refers to the earth plane as 'the Market.' Ayizan brings the Mysteries to the human domain. She rules the fringed palm frond that traditionally covers the new initiates' faces as they emerge from the Couché into the Lever ceremony. She is the Lwa that purifies the initiate." "In Vodoun the priest serves the loa in order to serve man. It is upon the priest that man depends for the means of controlling these cosmic forces, of correcting their errors and failures. Azaka (ah zaa kaa)Azaka is the lwa to petition anytime you want something to grow, to plant new seeds, any new beginning - plant form or not!OFFERINGS: Azaka is extremely fond of roasted corn. His favorite dishes to eat are the ones peasants feed on--boiled maize, bread soaked in oil and slices of small intestine with fatty membrane fried, cassava melons, unrefined sugar. His favorite drink is white rum and his tree is the avocado - but Azaka is is known as a voracious eater and will eat anything as an offering. Heck, you can just share your dinner with him!COLORS: green and gold. SYMBOLS: Farm tools, grains, veggies - things that grow.Though he is the lwa of agriculture, Azaka is generally seen as the brother of Ghede. For this reason Ghede will often come to the ceremonies for Azaka and come when Azaka has mounted someone. Azaka is a gentle simple peasant, but greatly respected by the peasants since he is a very hard worker. He is addressed as "cousin". He is found wherever there is country. He is usually barefoot, carries a macoute sack, wears a straw hat and has a pipe in his mouth. By nature he is suspicious, out for profit, fond of quibbling and has a fear and hatred of town folk. His vocal stylization consists of the almost unintelligible sounds of a goat. He is known for his gossip he spreads and for his "girl chasing." He is young and like to play when not working. Azaka controls the fields and like the farmers themselves, he is very watchful of detail. He notes who is treating whom in what manner, who is flirting with whom, who says what to whom etc. NAMES: Azacca or Zaka
Baron Samedi (bah-rOHN sahm-DEE)Guardian or protector of the grave, servant or "Father" of the Guede. As sexual spirits the Guedes govern the renewal of life and protect children. The grave of the first man buried in any cemetery in Haiti, whether the person in life participated in the Vodou religion or not, is dedicated to Baron (not Ghede)Black rooster, black goat, dark rum or rum with spicy hot peppers, cigars or ciggerettes. Also black sunglasses (with the right lens popped out for with his right eye he watches those present, lest anyone steal his food.)COLORS: Black, purple and white. SPECIAL DAYS: Saturday (his name Samedi is french for Saturday). FEAST DAY: Nov 2nd (The Feast of the Ancestors, Fet Ghede, is considered the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, much as in the European Wiccan tradition. Any debts to Baron, Maman Brigitte, or Ghede must be paid at this time.) SYMBOLS: Skull, black cross, coffins and phalluses. Also shovel, mirrored sunglasses. Baron Samedi is usually seen wearing top hat, black coat tails, sunglasses, and smoking a cigar. Often materializes as a tall muscular black man with the right side of his head painted white in a skull pattern, his color is white(the white of bones and skulls), normally depictet wearing a heavy white cross on a chain around his neck, as well as wearing a white tophat. A pick or a white cane, topped with a skull is usually found in his left hand. Individuals possessed by the Baron Samedi tell lewd jokes, wear dark glasses, smoke cigarettes or cigars, eat voraciously, and drink copious amounts of alcohol. Entire sects of Vodounists worship Guedes. NATION: Ghede. NAMES: Papa Gede (or Ghede) Bawon Samedi
Damballah (dahm Baa lah)Serpent spirit, Damballah is the eldest god and chief of the Loas. Promotes wisdom, inner strength, peace and sanctity. OFFERINGS: White foods like milk and flour. White chickens and eggs are sacrificed to him. COLORS: White. SYMBOLS: He is the great serpent (and is often portrayed as a snake) and the asson. Damballah Wedo is the ancient, venerable father; so ancient as to belong to a world before troubles began. Damballah's presence brings peace. He is the patron of the waters of the heavens, and of the springs and waters. The symbolic father of the loa, Damballah-Wedo represents the ancestral knowledge that forms the foundation of vodou. With his wife, Aida-Wedo, he also represents fertility and new life. Haitians call him Bon Dieu ("good god"). He is the image of benevolent, paternal innocence. He comes as a snake, plunging at once into the basin of water which is prepared for him, and then writhes upon the ground. Married to Aida Wedo.NAMES: Damballah Wedo; The Good Serpent of the Sky. Erzulie DantorConsidered the protector of both newly consecrated Houngans and Mambos, and the protector of mothers, abused childrenOFFERINGS: Silver chains and silver jewelry, Creme de Cacao, black female pigs (or serve her cooked pork), rich perfume and knives/daggers.COLORS: navy blue and golden yellowDantor is a black woman with tribal scars evident on her cheek. She is often depicted with a boy child in one arm, rich robes and a crown. She is a Petro lwa, but she is not served with red. Erzulie Dantor offers her devotees her protection, but more than that she is a capital magician! She has two husbands, Simbi Makaya and Ti-Jean Petro, both important magicians in their own right. Because of her fierce nature, although she is a lwa of orthodox Vodou, she is frequently referred to as a "djab" (wild lwa). Do not confuse Dantor with Erzulie Frieda - they are very different and do not get along.NATION: Petro. SAINTS: Santa Barbara Africana, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Czestochowa
Erzulie Freda (er zoo lee)Representing love, beauty, purity, the ideal female, and the moon, Erzulie is the most beloved of the loa. She can influence romance and marriage, good fortune, and artistic creation.OFFERINGS: Desserts, sweet drinks, champagne, perfumes, flowers, candles or Beauty Products. She LOVES anything beautiful and decadent. White Doves are also sometimes offered to herCOLORS: Pale blue and rose or pale pink. SPECIAL DAYS: Tuesdays/Thursdays. SYMBOLS: White Doves, The Heart or heart shaped veve. Erzulie Freda is pale in appearance; almost white, even though she is Dahomean in origin. Erzulie wears three wedding bands since she has been (or is) wedded to Dumballah, Ogoun and Agwe. She has often flirted with Zaka, but she has completely dismissed his more coarse brother Ghede as unworthy. She is pleasure-loving, extravagant and likes to give and get presents. Erzulie is fabulously rich, and, when she mounts someone the first act is always to accomplish her elaborate toilette. The very best of things which the houngan or mambo have are reserved for Erzulie. She will bathe, using soap still in a fresh wrapper if possible. She will dress in silks with fresh flowers and other signs of her femininity and specialness. She fond of men but mistrust women as rivals. She is a woman of etiquette, and when she pretends to speak French, she purposely talks in a high pitched voice. She is a master of coquetry. She may simply visit with her servants, or she may eat or drink with great delicacy. She loves to dance and is the most graceful of all the loa. She is quite special to men and will dance with them, kiss and caress them, even in an often embarrassing manner. Yet she is closely associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. NATION: Rada. Gran BwaHe is the protector of wildlife. A powerful healer who offers stability and grounding. He is the loa that must be called upon before one is ordained into the voudou priesthood. OFFERINGS: Strangely shaped pieces of wood and rock. Plants and trees.COLORS: Green and white or forest colors. SYMBOLS: Tree (often appears in the form of a tree or nature spiritGran Bwa, lord of the great forest, presides over the deepest mysteries of healing and initiation. Representations of this lwa tend to be abstract and usually evoke the form of a tree and leaves, or natural wood objects. Master of the Big Woods. Kalfu (Carrefour)   Legba is twined with his Petro opposite. Kalfu too controls the crossroads. Actually, were it not for him the world would be more rational, a better place. But, not unlike Pandora in Greek religion and myth, Kalfu controls the evil forces of the spirit world. He allows the crossing of bad luck, deliberate destruction, misfortune, injustice. Kalfu controls the in-between points of the crossroads, the off-center points. Legba controls the positive spirits of the day. Kalfu controls the malevolent spirits of the night. Yet Kalfu can control these evil spirits too. He is strong and tall, muscular. People do not speak in his presence. 
La Sirene (La Siren)Mother of All, Queen of the Seas. Go to her for health, power, deep peace, quiet strength, psychic ability and wealth. La Sirene has all of the ocean's tranquil beauty and peace, all of it's raging power, and all of it's incessant movement. She is the one who works and works and never is tired, never is fatigued.OFFERINGS: Mirrors, shells, pearls, perfume, honeydew melons and ocean water. Just do not serve her any seafood - as Queen of the Seas, she considers all life that lives in the sea her children.COLORS: all the hues of the ocean - blues, aquas and sea greens. SYMBOLS: Her sacred objects include a lambi, or conch shell, a trumpet, a mirror and a comb.La Sirene is often shown as a black woman with the lower body of a fish - like a mermaid. She stands between the sun and the moon, and she is surrounded by lesser mermaids and mermen, her escort and that of her husband Met Agwe, a mulatto man with green eyes who is Admiral of the Seven Seas. They are attended by fish and other marine life.NAMES: Sometimes associated with Yemaya (Nigerian Orisha) or Erzulie Freda depending on region. SAINTS: Saint Philomene or St. Martha.
Loko AtissouPapa Loko, the spirit who teaches the secrets to those called into the vodou priesthood. Papa Loko Atissou, is the Patron lwa of all houngans. In rituals, he is honored after Legba and Marrasa. Loko was the very first houngan, and legend says he was a human who ascended to the status of Lwa over time. It is Papa Loko who confers the asson, the beaded rattle of priesthood to the Kanzo initiates. OFFERINGS: roosters, rum, beer, coffee with sugar, herbs and tree branches. He is offered palm oil, popcorn, rice with various beans. Also black or white goats or russet colored oxen.COLORS: Red and White. DAY: Wednesday. FEAST DAYS: January 6th, March 19th, and (in a few houses) May 1st SYMBOLS: the tree, the poto mitan, the rooster and butterflies. All trees are sacred to him but a "loko" is also a tree that grows in Benin, Africa, and is said to reach enormous heights, some 15 meters. Therefore, Loko is also the Lwa of the Poteau Mitan, the center post of the peristil, where the Lwa come down to be with the Vodou congregation. Loko is compared to an invisible houngan and the guardian of all sanctuaries. He is known for his good judgment; often during conflicts he is called in to be judge. It has been said that he transforms into the wind and listens to people without them knowing he is there therefore Loko is said to know everyone's secrets - but he keeps them to himself. Like his freind Legba, Loko is also a messenger and communication loa, and is known for his intolerance of injustice. Trees are especially sacred to him, as they are also to Legba; and so is the Centerpost. It is Loko who gathers the ashe (magic) from heaven and gives it to his priests and prestesses - without him, magic could not be used. Portrayed in the form of a butterfly, Loco has an extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical uses of herbs. It is said that Houngans and Mambos receive their knowledge from Loko. Loko and his wife, Ayizan, are the major healers of the pantheon. NATION: Rada. NAMES: Loco, Papa Loco. SAINTS: St. Joseph as the father figure, for Loko is the father of all kanzo initiates.
Maman BrigitteMaman Brigitte is both the mother of the dead and as a judge of their lives and of earthly situations. Maman Brigitte is considered to be the wife of Baron, Master of the Cemetery and chief of all the departed ancestors, known as lwa Ghede. The grave of the first woman buried in any cemetery in Haiti is consecrated to Maman Brigitte, and it is there that her ceremonial cross is erected. She, as well as Baron, is invoked to "raise the dead", meaning to cure and save those who are on the point of death from illness caused by magic. OFFERINGS: Cigarettes, black coffee and white bread. Rum spiced with hot peppers.COLORS: Black and purple. SPECIAL DAY: Thursday. FEAST DAY: Like her husband Baron, Fet Ghede (Nov 2nd) is also her holiday. SYMBOLS: ceremonial cross, scales (for her sense of justice). Maman Brigitte, like the rest of the Baron/Ghede constellation, is a tough-talking lwa who uses a lot of obscenities. She drinks rum laced with hot pepper, so hot that a person not possessed by a lwa could never drink it. She also is known to pass hot Haitian peppers on the skin of her genitals, and this is the test to which women are subjected when they are suspected of "faking" possession. She dances the sexually suggestive and remarkably artistic banda, and the virtuosity of her dancing is legendary. Brigitte is a strong woman who teaches us that it’s OK to be both a mother/wife and an independent person. Brigitte is not so easy to pin down into stereotypes. She is devoted to her children and to Baron, but she is also full of her own passions. Brigitte shows that you don’t have to lose your own identity in a relationship or in your duties. Marassa, TheThe Sacred Twins. The Marasa represent abundance, blessings, the gift of children, the sacredness of family and the mysteries of the divine.OFFERINGS: Baby goat stew wrapped in banana leaves, toys, candy, fizzy drinks, popcorn.SYMBOLS: Palm leavesLes Marassa are the sacred Twins. They are the first children of God; they are the first Dead, and so the first Ancestors. As such they are always the first to be honored in Vodou ceremony. Twins are magickal to many cultures around the world. In Vodou, the Twins represent two bodies that share one soul; they span the abyss between the inner and outer worlds, the world of Spirit and the physical world. This symbolism is carried throughout Vodou in the sign of the Crossroads (the Cross in Christianity.) The horizontal arm of the Crossroads represents the earth plane of time and space. The vertical arm represents the flow of Spirit throughout the world. At the axis of the Crossroads, where the two worlds intersect, we first honor Les Marassa. OgounOgoun is a powerful warrior god who represents all aspects of power, strength and masculinity, including war, fire, lightning, politics, and metalworking. At times, the loa Ogu interprets Dumballah's messages. He can give strength through prophecy and magic. He has a passion for fire and likes the women. He's the spirit of fire and water. The members of this family are great drinkers, but alcohol has no effect on them. OFFERINGS: Cigars and white rum. Also any iron or metal offerings, especially tools or weapons. he likes animals that are red to be offered to him; for example, red or russet pigs or roosters. His food is african beans meal, mango, raw beef with a lot of pepperCOLORS: Red is Ogoun's main color. Sometimes red and blue or green and black depending on which aspect. DAYS: Wednesday. SYMBOLS: the sword or machete. He likes weapons and tools of a farmer. Mango trees are his favorate. Ogoun belongs to a family of "Ogouns" who are all blacksmiths and warriors. All aspects of Ogoun have the dominant theme of power and militancy. He represents a veteran of the "time of bayonets. Ogoun comes to mount people in various aspects of his character, but the people are quite familiar with each of them. There is a saying - "All Ogouns are Ogoun." If you are asking something specifically of specific Ogoun, then you would want to honor that Ogoun separately. As a general gift -- just "Ogoun" is fine. Some Aspects of Ogoun include: Ogoun Panama: a mighty lwa who guards doors and reminds believers of Legba. Ogoun the wounded warrior: Here he even assumes a Christ-figure pose which the people know well from their Christian associations. He saves us. He suffers so we dont have to.NAMES: General Ogoun, Ogou, Ogu, Ogorin. Some Aspects of Ogoun include: Ogoun Badagris, Ogoun Ferraille, Ogoun the wounded warrior, Ogoun Balendijo and Ogoun Panama. SAINTS: St. Jacques, the warrior general and is often in the guise of a revolutionary war general.

His past follows him in that "Ogu's forge" is the name given to an iron rod stuck in a brazier which represents him. COLORS: Red is Ogoun's main color. As Ogoun Badagris he may lift a person up and carry him or her around to indicate his special attention and patronage. Voodoo God of might, power and triumph through obstacles. Ogoun BalendijoOgoun Balendijo is another warrior but also a powerful healer. He joins a war whenever a conflict breaks out.  Balanjo is portrayed as a brightly colored spirit, with a fiery complexion and a bright green textured and beaded headscarf.  Feathers and an antique button adorn the neck, and a multi-colored paisley print robe with gold braided trim adorns the body. This powerful piece is appropriate anywhere, but is certainly recommended in the presence of any person healing from disease or injury.  
Ogoun Ferraille (Fa RAY)Lwa of the armies, patron saint of the blacksmiths and protector of brave men. He gives strength to the servitors by slapping them on the thighs or back.OFFERINGS: Iron or metal tools. Spiced rum and cigarettes. SYMBOLS: See "Ogoun" for more details.Lord of battle. He is also the god of logic, reason and wisdom. His language is coarse and rough, just like a soldier. As Ogoun Feraille, or St. Jacques, he may impart strength to a serviteur by slapping him on the thighs, arms, and back. St. Jacque is the national hero, the general who is greeted with a military salute and the national anthem. He paces back and forth rapidly, every gesture conveying a sense of crisis. He announces "Grains moin fret!" (My testicles are cold,) which is his way of asking for a drink of rum. Often he will spurt this rum through his teeth in a fine spray, a gesture special to the Ogouns. NAMES: Ogoun Ferei, Ogoun Feray. SAINTS: St. Jaques or St. James the Great, is on July 25th.
ShangoShango is the spirit of thunder, fire and lightening. He is the King of justice, a proud warrior/protector. He is full of passion, and likes the drums and dance. He brings about firey changes for the better. Pay attention when working with Shango - easily something can start burning. OFFERINGS: Green bananas, hot cornmeal and okra. Also hot spices or food, red apples, red wine, beer or rumCOLORS: Red and White. FEAST DAY: December 4th. SYMBOL: double-headed axe, drums, rams, roosters and turtles.Shango is easily one of the most popular and beloved of the lwa because of his good humor and outgoing personality. He is virile, likes a good party and is a lwa of the people. In Yorùbá mythology, Shango is perhaps the most important Orisha; he is a Sky Father, god of thunder and the ancestor of the Yorùbá. He is a warrior King, and we salute him by saying "Cabio sile Shango" when thunder is heard. He loves to dance and have a good time as he is likes the drum and dance. He is also quite popular among the ladies - especially the female Orisha - namely Oya and Oshun.NAMES: Chango, Sango, Xango. SAINTS: St. Barbara in Santería, wherein he is called Chango or St. Michael the Archangel.
Simbi (SIM Bee or Saa Bee)Simbi is above all the preeminent magician, statesman and wise soul who brings power, wealth and insight to his servitors. He is very helpful with all magical work, divinations & granting second-sight and clairvoyance. Call upon Simbi for assistance in any magical ritual or ceremony. The Spiritual principle of smoothe wavelike fluidity.OFFERINGS: Water, whiskey, green ribbons or green candles. Speckeled roosters are sacrificed to him. Offer him water (if it's Andezo, offer water from two sources, such as ocean and fresh water), rain water, especially rain water from a lightening storm, green ribbons and candles, snake skins and kleren. COLORS: Green and White generally. DAY: Tuesday SYMBOLS: He is a crossroads lwa and his vever is a snake in a field of crosses. In this he is related to Legba and also to Ghede. Like Ogoun, there are a family of Simbi's (or Cymbie's). Simbi is the collective name for a very diverse group of ancient ancestral spirits. His primary Rada function is as patron of springs and rains, of rainfall and fresh water; in this he is similar to Damballah. However, he is most often called in connection with his other major function, that of patron to magicians. All magic is performed under his patronage. Simbi cannot do without the freshness of water. Simbi Makaya is quite bellicose, talkative and gregarious (different from the usually shy and relaxed Simbi family). Simbi is also a lwa of communication. Things regarding communication which move at the speed of light are in Simbi's domain (such as nerve impulses, Internet, electricity.) He is associated with crossroads. SoboLoa of strength. Sobo is a very powerful loa and well known for his bravery as a warrior. Sobo is said to have healing power and is often called upon to cure illness of the supernatural origin to his devotees. He is also called upon to help with money and general prosperity matters.OFFERINGS: He dines upon goat meat and mutton, and often lives under trees.COLORS: White and Lemon Yellow. SYMBOLS: Lightening and RainSobo is a lighthearted lwa with the attitude of "ask sincerely for what you want, then KNOW it will happen". When he possesses someone, that person must dress up like a general in the army. When he addresses the congregation during a mounting it is like a general addressing his troops. Sobo is considered an important figure in voodoo mythology. He is the symbol of strength, the ideal of voodoo priests who want to be respected figures in their communities. Because of the strength he procures for his followers, Sobo's presence is continually requested to bring security and protection to the congregation. He who is with Sobo is protected against wild spirits. Sobo and Bade are uniquely connected in the Vodou pantheon. Sobo is often referred to as the lwa of rain, while Bade is the lwa of wind. A better interpretation would be to say that both Sobo and Bade are escorts of Gran Met, for they rule in the sky, where Gran Met is thought to reside. NAMES: Sobo Kessou
