www.SPELLMAKER.com ABOUT TO BEGIN OUR 17TH YEAR IN BUSINESS!
Volume 4, November & December 2011, Issue #14 Editor: Khouzhan Phoenix Fleurette-Beauchamp-Corfield Dear Bridget, Just a very brief message this time around, since we've all been caught up in the holiday madness. Not only are we about to begin another calendar year, but Spellmaker is preparing to enter our 17th year in business! Over the years we've added many new products and services, refined some old ones, and helped many, many beloved clients to learn, grow, and achieve their hearts' desires. We've offered -- and continue to offer -- much educational material, inspiration, and technical and emotional support through our website, Confidential Caseworker program, online forum and blogs. And the members of our Voodoo House's Founding Family continue to learn, grow, and reach new milestones in their spiritual journeys. Therefore, we look to this New Year with excitement and expectation of the wonderful things we know it will bring to all of us... not only to our Spellmaker family, but to you -- our dear clients -- as well! A Very Happy Holiday Season and a Bright and Blessed New Year to You All! Love, light, and peace, Mambo Samantha Corfield Parran Matthew Corfield SPOTLIGHT PRODUCTS OF THE MONTH: CONSECRATED STICK CANDLES The holiday season is filled with the beauty of candlelight, and therefore a good time to focus on the simple but versatile stick candle. Candles are a part of many magickal undertakings as well as religious rituals. The light and heat of the flame help to energize and draw in the spirits, as well as to help the practitioner focus and meditate upon his or her prayers, petitions or spellwork goals. While Spellmaker offers a wide variety of candle magick kits which use figure candles to achieve their purposes, we also offer a selection of traditional stick candles which may be used in a multitude of ways. It is most effective to use candles in a color appropriate to the goal of your ritual and/or the spirit(s) with whom you are working. However, many of the candles you find in retail stores are merely white candles dipped in colored wax; these should never be used for magickal purposes. Proper ritual candles are made entirely of colored wax (with the exception, of course, of white candles!). The stick candles available from Spellmaker are solid-colored throughout, perfect for any ritual or magickal purpose, whether Vodou/Voodoo or other traditions. Available colors include white, black, red, blue, green, purple, yellow and pink. Further, all our candles are specially consecrated by Mambo Sam, making them especially powerful. Of course, you are welcome to consecrate them in your own tradition once you receive them. Additionally, they may be carved with the name of someone you are trying to influence or a goal you have in mind, anointed and dressed with an appropriate oil or potion and herbs, or otherwise "personalized" to suit your purpose. For suggestions on how to make use of these products, or for help choosing the color(s) best suited to your own personal situation, please consult your confidential caseworker. To purchase our consecrated stick candles, please visit our Candle Magick page. You'll find the stick candles about halfway down the page, below the Candle Magick kits. May they bring light and success into your life! VOODOO BASICS: FOCUS ON... OFFERINGS As we're in the midst of the gift-giving season, it seems an appropriate time to talk about the topic of offerings – the “gifts” we give our spirits. The giving of offerings is or has been a component in many religions, both well-known and obscure. Judeo-Christian scripture contains lengthy passages pertaining to the types of offerings preferred by God and the proper preparation and presentation of these offerings. Tribal religions from Africa to Asia to North and South America involve ritual sacrifice of animals (or even humans!), the burning of sage or incense, or the giving of crops, tools, or other gifts to deities and ancestors. Whatever the nature of the gifts, or the methods in which they are offered, the purposes of giving them are somewhat universal: to appease an angry deity or atone for some transgression; to solicit favor and assistance from someone in the spiritual realm; or to show gratitude for blessings received. In New Orleans Voodoo, we give offerings to our ancestors and Les Lois (the Voodoo spirits, also spelled Lwa) for similar reasons (although, fortunately, the majority of our spirits are rather understanding and therefore rarely need to be “appeased” like an angry demon!). The primary reason for offerings is to strengthen and sustain not only our spirits themselves but also our bond with them. The giving of offerings shows our Lois that they have not been forgotten – that we honor their wisdom and power, and we welcome their assistance and influence in our lives. We also give offerings to ask for special favors – you’ll notice that all Spellmaker 9-day spell kits require the giving of certain offerings throughout the nine days and also upon completion of the spell. When you opt for a Solo or Dual Casting, in which Mambo Sam performs a 9-day ritual on your behalf, Mambo also makes special offerings to Les Lois based upon the particular spirit or spirits she petitions, as well according to her status as a Mambo Asogwe (the highest rank in the Haitian Vodou tradition) and a Voodoo Priestess (in the New Orleans Voodoo tradition). Finally, we also present offerings to Les Lois to show gratitude when they have answered our petitions, or when we have received a surprise blessing from them (for, as you continue to build a relationship with Les Lois, you’ll notice that good things just start to happen!). To put it in a nutshell, we give offerings to say, “We appreciate you,” “We need you,” and “We’re grateful to you.” Offerings to Les Lois and ancestors can be simple or extravagant; if you can’t afford much, the spirits will understand. What’s most important is that whatever is given, is given with a sincere heart. After all, in Haiti – the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere – an offering might consist of a single small cup of water, the only thing the Vodou practitioner can afford. Water, in fact, is a gift which nearly always should be among the offerings on your altar, regardless of the purpose of your ritual. Water has a great significance in our religion; it is symbolic not only as one of the basic necessities for life, but also as the vehicle upon which the spirits arrive. When we are born, our arrival is preceded by the birthing “waters” – the fluid in which we grew within our mother’s womb. When we die, our souls retreat beneath the Abysmal Waters for a period of rest and purification. After this period of rest, it is through water that our souls are reclaimed, and we are reborn as spiritual beings. However, if you ARE in a financial position to present multiple high-quality offerings to Les Lois, you should certainly do so. A Voodoo ritual is not an excuse to rid yourself of stale or out-of-date items from your refrigerator, that necklace with the cracked pendant, or that dish of candy your toddler spilled on the floor! You should never, ever offer to the spirits anything that you would not offer to a much-loved guest in your home. Food items should be fresh and appetizing; non-edible gifts – even if they are simple, inexpensive trinkets – should be clean and in good condition. Never offer spoiled food or broken, dirty items to Les Lois. If your financial situation is less than ideal, don’t despair; again, whatever you offer will be well-received if it is given with an honest heart. If your offerings must be simple and sparse, you can show your sincerity by presenting them in a special way. Place them on a piece of your best china, or dress up your altar with inexpensive paper doilies, napkins or scarves in appropriate colors, or even glitter or confetti. Les Lois will appreciate the fact that you made a special effort on their behalf, through the best means available to you. When presenting offerings, it is traditional to first “orient” them before placing them on the altar. This is done by holding each item up in turn to the four directions: first to the East, next to the West, then to the North, and finally to the South. This should be done with the proper reverence; you are presenting your gifts to the spirits, who are all around us. Further, the four directions form a cross, symbolic of the intersection between the visible (“living”) world and the invisible (spirit) world. You may wish to bow or curtsy slightly as you present each item. Then, as you place the item on your altar, indicate for whom it is intended (“This is for you, Papa Legba,” “This is for you, Ogoun,” etc., or something to the effect of “Please share this gift,” if you are honoring multiple spirits). While water is a universally acceptable offering, each Loi has his or her own list of items which are especially enjoyed or preferred; for example, Erzulie Freda loves chocolate, lacy or frilly items, and sweet, light-colored drinks. A specific Loi’s preferences are often tied to that spirit’s nature or origins – metal and military items are favored by the Ogoun family of spirits, who are known historically as blacksmiths and warriors. Additionally, there are some items which are favorites of numerous Lois. For example, rum is a popular offering among many spirits, from the Baron and Brigitte to Papa Legba to Ogoun Ferraille. You'll find lots of helpful information on the various Lois and what offerings each prefers in the "Working With the Vodou/Voodoo Spirits" section of the Spellmaker Forum. These suggestions, however, are by no means a comprehensive list; as you get to know the various Lois better, you'll develop a feel for what offerings are appropriate to each, and may even begin to get some "hints" from Les Lois themselves! Ancestors — especially those whom you knew personally before they passed on — are even easier to please; just present them with things which they enjoyed during life, or that you'd think they'd prefer based upon what you know about them. In conclusion, whether you're just beginning your Voodoo journey or are a seasoned hand at spell and ritual work, take a moment in the hustle and bustle pace of this busy time of year to give thanks and show respect to our ancestors and spirit friends. Reflect upon what they've done for you in the past, and what they could do for you in the new year, and give them a few tokens of your love and appreciation. Whether you put together an ancestor altar, or just pour a little rum on the ground and leave a few cupcakes against a tree, your consideration will be appreciated and rewarded. WEBSITE NEWS
